The Jimmy Fund

There are many prestigious charities in Boston that work with sports teams and their representatives. The Jimmy Fund was founded in 1948 and has raised millions of dollars through thousands of local charity events. This organization solely supports Boston's Dana-Farber cancer institute. The institute raises money for adult and adolescent cancer care, improving the chances of survival for people battling cancer around the world. One main event is the WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-telethon. Over the span of 36 hours and two Red Sox games the broadcast shows stories from Dana-Farber doctors, patients, Nurses, celebrity guests, and athletes. Since 2002 this event has raised over 37 million dollars to support research at the Dana-Farber cancer institute.

This event not only broadcasts the Red Sox games for fans but also gives them a little bit more knowledge about cancer and the families affected by it. Telling stories of cancer patients and the doctors is a very good way to make people really understand what they are going through. Having big time Red Sox players like Dustin Pedroia talk about cancer and the major affects it has on peoples lives really make other people think and donate money. This money helps people worldwide and gives the Red Sox a lot of good publicity.
